How to Support Someone in Recovery Without Enabling

Dr. Ambrish Singal6 min read2026-04-02

Every family member of someone in recovery faces the same dilemma: how do I help without accidentally making things worse? The instinct to protect and rescue is powerful. But in addiction, rescuing often means shielding the person from the natural consequences that motivate change.

Support vs. Enabling: The Key Distinctions

SUPPORT: Driving them to therapy appointments. ENABLING: Making excuses to their employer for missed work. SUPPORT: Expressing concern about their behavior. ENABLING: Ignoring substance use to 'keep the peace.' SUPPORT: Setting boundaries around substance use in your home. ENABLING: Allowing use in your home to 'at least know where they are.' SUPPORT: Encouraging them to face consequences. ENABLING: Paying their debts, legal fees, or bills caused by substance use. SUPPORT: Loving the person. ENABLING: Accepting the addiction.

Practical Boundaries That Help

Be specific and consistent: 'I will not give you money, but I will pay for treatment directly.' 'You are welcome in our home when you are sober.' 'I will not lie or cover for you.' 'I will attend family therapy sessions with you.' 'I will call your sponsor/doctor if I notice signs of relapse.' State boundaries calmly, out of love, and FOLLOW THROUGH. A boundary that isn't enforced is just a suggestion — and in addiction, suggestions don't work.

Taking Care of Yourself

You cannot pour from an empty cup. Attend Al-Anon, Nar-Anon, or family therapy — these are for YOU, not just for the person in recovery. Maintain your own social connections and activities. Set limits on how much time and energy you devote to the addiction versus the rest of your life. Accept that you cannot control their recovery — you can only control your response. Get professional support for YOUR anxiety, depression, or trauma that has accumulated from living with addiction.
